V7 Hillshader and False Elevation Color

Basic Hill Shading

The V7 Hillshader quickly combines topographic maps with elevation data to build high resolution 3D shaded relief maps.

Hill Shading Example

Let's take the area around Mt. Solitude (near Gannett Peak Wyoming) as an example. Unshaded the map looks like this:

To Hillshade this map, we select the menu option: "Tools: Hillshader..."

Checking the "High Resolution Output (24-bit)" allows greater color depth in the shaded image. Press 'OK' and All Topo quickly shades the map:

Here is a snippet of this map showing the continuous shading and high resolution of the professional reference series:

False Elevation Color

False elevation coloring is useful for highlighting elevation features, and just plain interesting. To add false elevation coloring to the Hillshaded image, check the "Add Elevation Color" box, then click the "Set Elev Color" button:

The "Elevation Shading" controller is shown:

You can define custom shading profiles, or press the 'Load' button and choose one of the predefined profiles. Finally press 'Done', then 'OK' to shade and false elevation color the map:

Simulating Reservoirs

Elevation coloring is especially handy for visualizing the effects of building a reservoir. By manually setting the extents of the coloring we can shade everything below a fixed elevation with water:

In this example, the top of the reservoir is at 10275 feet. Shading the map results in:

All Topo V7 comes with 32 predefined color profiles, here are samples of a few of them:
