Why Purchase a Mapping or GIS GPS Receiver?

Many AllTopo Map customers struggle with the accuracy and repeatability of consumer grade GPS receivers. We hear the complaints and our All Topo Maps program often takes the blame for coordinates that ‘just don’t look and plot right’.

• “Waypoints acquired at the north end of a project on Monday, plot south of data collected at the south end of the project on Tuesday.”

• “Waypoints recorded along a straight line appear to fill a large area.”

• “Waypoint elevations, for points at the same elevation, vary by 100 feet.”

• “Waypoints and Trackpoints are not acquired under heavy cover.”

• “WAAS reception is undependable resulting in wild position changes when it is lost and acquired.”

• Consumer receivers still struggle to provide coordinates that are within hundreds of feet of the true value.

• Consumer receivers don’t have sufficient resolution to record points that are nearby, but not at the same point.

• Consumer receivers have been optimized for long battery life, not high sensitivity.

• Consumer receivers have little immunity to multipath and reflections.

• Consumer receivers are not job oriented.

• Consumer receivers don’t promote worthwhile data attribution.
