Special Notes on Exporting Maps From
'All Topo Maps' to 'TerraSync®'

There is an issue with TerraSync V2.3 NOT importing all of the file types that Pathfinder Office accepts from AllTopo. In addition V2.3 requires that the standard worldfile extension be renamed.  Here is a list of filetypes that can be written by AllTopo and used in TerraSync:

Filetype Extension (Image, Wordfile) TerraSync V2.4+ Accepts TerraSync V2.3 Accepts
Windows Bitmap .BMP, .BPW YES Yes, but you MUST rename the worldfile extension to .WLD
JPEG .JPG, .JGW YES Yes, but you MUST rename the worldfile extension to .WLD
Tiff .TIF, .TFW YES NO

NOTE: AllTopo exports UTM projected maps, selectable NAD27 or NAD83 projection.

Summary: TerraSync V2.3 does NOT accept TIFF images. V2.3 does not accept the standard world file extensions, the worldfile that AllTopo writes must be changed to .WLD!

Exporting Maps From
'All Topo Maps' to 'Trimble Pathfinder Office'®

'Pathfinder Office'® users typically use 'All Topo Maps' as a base map source for pathfinder. Either

  • portions of maps
  • entire quadrangles
  • large seamed areas comprised of multiple maps

can be quickly exported for use with Pathfinder Office®

Exporting the Whole Map or Viewed Map

To export the currently viewed map from the All Topo viewer, select the menu option "Edit: Export Map to Clipboard, File or GIS':

The 'Map Export Wizard' will be shown:

Next select '1. Export just the viewed map', '2. To a image file', then press the '...' button to the right of the Image File Name to browse for a reasonable image file path and name:

Make sure you choose 'Save as type:' = 'TIF (Best for GIS and CAD). Press 'Save' to return to the 'Map Export Wizard'. Be sure to check 'Write a .tfw worldfile ...'. If you don't have any annotations on the map, checking 'Force 8-bit Output' may reduce the output file size by a factor of 3.

Un-check the 'Resample Output Image' check box to write a full resolution image, then finally press the 'Export' button to write the image file.

Exporting a BigTopo Map

If you need a base map that covers multiple quadrangles, you can export a georeferenced TIF image directly from BigTopo. Follow the normal BigTopo instructions (BigTopo Tour), but choose to 'Export BigTopo as generic graphic picture'. Select a .TIF image (a .TFW world file will automatically be generated:

(This dialog is from BigTopo's 'Output File' tab)

Opening and Registering Exported Maps in Pathfinder

From the Pathfinder menu, select "Options: Coordinate System".

Choose:

  • System to 'Universal Transverse Mercator'
  • Zone '(the proper UTM Zone)'
  • Datum to 'NAD 1927 (CONUS)'
  • Coordinate Units to 'Meters'

From the "File: Background" menu, load the new image.

 Press "Add...":

then browse for the image (you might need to change 'Files of type:' to '*.tif'):

When you find the correct file, press 'Open' to add it to the background file list:

Finally press OK and Pathfinder will load and display the selected background image.

Now you can open and print regular data files on top of your background image.

To turn off background map display, simply go back to File, Background… and uncheck the check box next to the filename to turn it off. Press the Add… button to add other background maps.

You can quickly generate an 'All Topo Maps' .HWP file from 'Pathfinder Office'. This is useful if you have acquired a series of coordinates with a Trimble GPS and want to use these points from within All Topo Maps. Typically, 'Pathfinder Office' users will differentially correct coordinates before exporting them.

To Export the current waypoints from 'Pathfinder Office to 'All Topo Maps', select 'Utilities: Export...' from Pathfinder's main menu:

The Export dialog will be displayed.

First press the 'Browse...' button in the "Input Files" section to select the Pathfinder Office data file you want to export, after selecting the correct waypoint file, press 'Open':

then press the 'New...' button under "Choose an Export Setup" to configure the output tool:

Enter a name (like 'Export to ATM') for the setup, and select "Copy of existing setup:" with "Sample Configurable ASCII Setup" then press OK:

The 'Export Setup Properties - Export to ATM' dialog will be displayed. Choose "Use Export Coordinate System" and press the 'Change...' button:

to display the 'Export' dialog. Choose 'Coordinate System and Zone', then set the Coordinate System to "Latitude/Longitude" and the Datum to "NAD27 (Conus)". (If you are working in Alaska, choose "NAD27 (Alaska)".) Press OK:

The 'Export Setup Properties' dialog will be displayed. Select the Configurable ASCII tab and press the 'New...' button in the 'Template List' section:

The 'ASCII Export Template Editor: ATM Export' will be displayed. Select the features you want to export ('Points' in this example). Set the 'Output File Extension' to "HWP", select 'Field Format' 'Delimited', select 'Delimiters: Field' to 'Space'. Finally compose a 'Template' by using the 'Macro Palette' buttons. Press {Latitude} then {Longitude}:

then {Text: } enter a '; ' (semicolon space) for the Text value:

Next press {Feature ID} (this adds the Pathfinder Office waypoint number as the All Topo Maps Waypoint Name) then press {Text: } and enter '; ' (semicolon space) and finally press the {Attributes} button to add the Pathfinder Office waypoint name as the All Topo Maps Waypoint Description:
