DeLorme makes the great Gazetteer series, the fantastic Street Atlas USA (a
registered trademark of DeLorme), and the Topo USA (again a registered trademark
of DeLorme) topographic software. Topo USA runs about $99, and includes DEM
(Digital Elevation Model) based topo maps of the entire United States.
Topo USA is a great product if you are traveling in an RV across the country. The map
detail is disappointing for off road use. $99.95 [ http://www.delorme.com/topousa/default.asp
]
DeLorme has '3D TopoQuads'.
This tool provides both DEM based vector maps and seamless raster images of the 1:24,000
scale quads in a moderately priced tool. TopoQuads can 'drape' the topomap images
over the DEM to generate a 3D shaded relief map effect. $99.95 per state [

DeLorme also publishes the Eartha Atlas. This world atlas, rocks. Get

Destination Mapping Systems, Inc. (DMS); +1 800 224-8601; http://www.maptrails.com
DMS's product State Explorer is a 1:100,000 scale USGS
product available for several states.
ESRI makes ARC/INFO (registered trademark of ESRI) and
ARC/VIEW (registered trademark of ESRI), the professional
user's mapping program.
Even if you already own an ESRI product, you may find All Topo Maps a good
companion product. All Topo Maps will export .TIF and .TFW worldfiles for direct
input to most ESRI GIS products. Plus you will enjoy the higher resolution rendering that
All Topo Maps provides for zoomed out views.

Moving map software for GPS receivers. $135 Canadian. Very nifty GPS interface, some maps are included.
The GIS Data Depot has some coverage of many states. Digital products are available in
DRG, DEM, DLG and other formats. Free downloads of single DRG files may be possible, or files can
be copied to a CD and sent to you.
Image Peak makes/distributes the ChartTiff series of de-collared maps. You can purchase
decollared and tiled maps for $2 per map; or single DRG maps for $1 per quad.
Land Info supplies digital maps. They have the 'mother-load' of digital map
stock.
Maptech's fine product line is similar to All Topo Map sets.
In September 2008 the Terrain mapping tools were acquired by
www.mytopo.com.
In addition to a full line of microwave and point-to-point link analysis
software, Micropath supplies DRG stock at the most reasonable prices with the
best service.
(used to be Wildflower Productions - 'Topo!')
National Geographic now has "full state" sets available. The NG
product is seamless, Lat/Lon projections.
Navitrak produces Canadian
mapping products. Along with many other mapping devices.
The USGS is the base source for almost every 1:24,000, most 1:100,000 scale and
1:250,000 scale digital mapping products. You too can purchase the raw DRGs (Digital
Raster Graphic) maps from the USGS.
DRGs (see http://mcmcweb.er.usgs.gov/drg/)
are big .TIFF files. They may be purchased one at a time or in groups. DRGs are available
by ftp or on CD-ROM. The USGS charges $45 per order plus $1 per file. (Utah = $1,475;
Colorado = $1,990; Idaho=$1,864.)
The USGS has several commercial partners. Check out [
BPartners ]
for a current list of USGS Digital Cartographic Data Business Partners.
Raw DRGs for many states are available at no cost via the web,
see
[ Free Maps ],
http://www.gisdatadepot.com/. You may wonder why iGage sells a derivative product of data that is available at
no cost:
The DRG's don't include a viewer, nor are they connected to each other in an easy to
use format (DRG's have very cryptic filenames.) You can't enter a place name and get there
easily with the raw DRG's. Since the DRGs are so large, it takes quite a bit of computer
resources to view them. Even if you are going to use the DRG's with another viewing
program like Fugawi, you may still find All Topo Maps convenient for determining which DRG
file to open.
An entire state, the size of Idaho or Wyoming, zip compressed, represents about 6
gigabytes of data. Since the data is fully compressed, your modem can not further compress
each file for transfer. Expect download times of 10 to 15 minutes with a 56K modem per
quad, that's about 13 days download time per state. Uncompressed a full state
requires about 14 gigabytes.
